St. Marys Paper Corp. is planning to build a biomass cogeneration plant in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to convert wood waste biofibre into electricity. The $170 million project will produce 30 megawatts of electricity, which will be sold to the grid, and used as heat and process steam for the mill. The facility will require 200,000 tonnes of biomass annually, some of which will be provided by the town of St. Marys’ mill residues and legacy piles of wood waste. The company is also in the process of pursuing partnerships with private investors and the Ontario government. Construction of the facility will take up to two years to build. St Marys Paper has begun the required regulatory and environmental screening process and is currently obtaining public and private sector financing. The paper mill is the city’s third-largest industrial employer in Sault Ste. Marie and is responsible for approximately 1,000 direct and indirect jobs.
