Western Biomass Power Corp. and the Tsilhqot’in National Government have teamed up to turn wood waste into clean energy. The joint venture proposes to build a $260 million 60 megawatt biomass power generation facility located in Hanceville, British Columbia, near the Sigurdson Brothers Mill in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region. Using mountain pine beetle-killed wood, Western Biomass Power intends to build wood-fired plants using logging and mill wastes. The project falls under phase two of BC Hydro’s Bioenergy Call, which focuses on community-level electricity supply solutions for biomass. The program will seek at least two biomass projects that can provide cost-effective electricity and local benefits. All proposals are set to be reviewed in December.
