Nova Scotia Power Inc. announced that it has applied to the Utility and Review Board for approval of a power purchase agreement for renewable energy from biomass. The proposed project involves a collaboration between local companies, NewPage Port Hawkesbury Ltd. paper mill and Strait Bio-Gen Ltd., to produce 60 megawatts of electricity from waste wood materials. The electricity generated from the project will be sold to NSP. The biomass project will help diversify NSP’s supply of renewable energy and inject a significant amount of revenue to the Nova Scotia economy. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for mid-June.
