Power provider, BC Hydro and integrated forest products company, Tembec of Quebec, have partnered to increase the purchase of clean, cost-effective electricity from Tembec’s Skookumchuck pulp mill in southeastern British Columbia. The agreement aims at enhancing Tembec’s power plant operation, leading to increased generation and enabling the mill to produce more electricity that can be sold to BC Hydro. Nearly 228 gigawatt hours per year of energy is expected to be produced—the equivalent of enough electricity to power 23,000 homes from biomass resources such as sawmill residue, logging debris and residual wood. The 10-year contract will enhance the viability of the Skookumchuck facility and provide long-term economic benefit to the community.
